National Marathon Championship Results

National Marathon Kayak Championships 2013

Report from Bradford on Avon Kayak Club – Formed 1873  – Part of the Bradford on Avon Rowing Club.

Prepared: 27th August 2013.

The club saw a number of their paddlers compete in the National Kayak Marathon Championships at Pangbourne near Reading over the last weekend.  Sprint ace club member and gold medal holder Ed McKeever was not competing being away training abroad in preparation for the forthcoming Sprint World Championships in Duisburg.

Racing was held on the River Thames in blustery conditions with river boat traffic making the water conditions choppy and at times difficult over the course, especially around the turns. Competitors raced over 8 miles  with 2 portages or 12 miles with 3 portages. A portage is where the competitor has to quickly exit his kayak and run around 200mtrs with it before re entry to the river.  The National Championships were the final selection for the World Championships to be held this year in Copenhagen in September.

Over 64 Mike Purchase of Trowbridge was the first to achieve success racing early on Saturday with a Silver Medal.  Unfortunately club Commodore John Escott did not manage a medal in his Over 54 class with fierce competition from 21 other competitors  but finished a creditable 7th. This was to be Johns first event of the day with another race to come.

James Missen racing in the U18 12 mile race suffered a small technical hitch off the start line of 27 boats but quickly recovered to a creditable 5th position down on 4th by a narrow margin of 1 second.

Richard Lewis racing in the Over 44 K1 class had a hard fought race taking Silver only 4 seconds behind the winner, after 8 gruelling miles.

Stan Missen of Bradford  on Avon racing in the Over 49 class achieved 5th place of 37 boats with a time of just over the hour at 1.01.27

Sundays  saw the double kayaks racing and some large fields with crowded start lines and several capsizes.

The start line of over 44 men’s K2 had a field of 28 boats including Sir Steve Redgrave, the former Olympic gold medal rower partnered by Roger Hatfield racing for Longridge Kayak Club.

Bradford on Avon members Richard Lewis and Stan Missen partnered up for this race and collected the Gold just some 14 seconds ahead of silver in some hard racing to the final 200mtrs when they broke free.  Sir Steve came 27th and announced ‘I feel depressed, frustrated and p***** off and what a lot of fun we had!’

Sunday also saw James Missen team up with Bruce Jones of Elmbridge in the Boys U18 K2.  They came 4th with the first 5 boats in the race only separated by 13 seconds after  12 miles.
